These adorable chunky scrunchies are one of my favorite go-to knitting projects. Not only are they awesome for using up scrap yarn but they're super quick to complete. These scrunchies make the perfect addition to any outfit or hairstyle, giving them great potential as an easy gift.

You'll begin by knitting back and forth until your piece is the desired size. Then you will bind off and sew the piece together. This project is beginner-friendly and a great way to practice knitting if you're still not quite confident and comfortable! This pattern includes detailed pictures of the sewing and assembly process so you can easily follow along.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to start this project, you will need...

→ 10mm knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) --------- can be knit on circular or flat needles.

→ roughly 50g of size 6 (chunky) yarn

→ hair elastic ------- make sure to check that the elastic you're using is sturdy and strong, you don't want it to break once you've sewn everything up!

→ measuring tape

→ scissors

→ tapestry needle

Once you have your materials ready, you can begin casting on and knitting:

  • Using your preferred method, cast on 30 stitches

  • Knit in stockinette stitch (knit a row, then purl a row) until the piece measures 4.5"/11.5cm

  • Bind off all stitches, break yarn leaving a 5'/12.5cm tail

Now that you have a knit rectangle, you can begin sewing the piece together.

With the right side of your work facing upwards,

Bring the edges of the piece together so that the wrong side of the work begins to face outwards:

Sew the two edges together using the tail from the bind off. Once sewn the piece should resemble a tube:

Weave in your ends. Next, with the wrong side of the work facing outward, place the hair elastic around the tube:

Lastly, fold the edges of the knitted piece around the hair elastic, making sure the right side of your work is facing outward. With a new piece of yarn sew the edges together using preferred method--- personally, I'd recommend mattress stitch because it is slightly stretchy.

And voila! Weave in any loose ends and your scrunchie is complete!
